Nicholas pretended to be at work as Edy swathed herself against the weather and left the house. He did not want her to feel that he was imposing his company upon her, yet he remained uneasy at the thought of her roaming the island on her own. She might encounter her ghost again, or have a fall on the rocks, which grew slippery when it rained. And it was all rocks and hard places, or unforgiving sea, on the inappropriately named Providence Island.
After a moment, he laid down his pen and followed her into the dripping gloom. He would not smother her. She needn’t even be aware that he was there.
He was relieved to observe that she was sure-footed on the trail and moved easily as she headed for the dock. The path was steep and rocky, but she managed it without fuss, so he felt safe in hanging back and allowing to her enjoy her privacy. She stopped once in a while to look at the daffodils or to address a comment to Tristam, who would also stop and listen politely as she recited T.S. Eliot to him.
Finally, she reached the peer. That seemed to be her goal, though she made no move to step out onto it once she arrived. He could understand her hesitation. It looked none too stable with the sea churning around it.
“Tristam, I’m not a lesser cut of meat, am I?” she asked the cat as she took a seat on a slab of stone. “And doesn’t talent count for something? I have—had—a lovely voice. And I am not a bad swimmer even now.”
The comment made Nicholas frown. What could be her meaning? The designation did not sound flattering.
“He said I’m not an amoeba, so maybe he thinks of me as prime rib rather than cheap hamburger. Or at least a chuck roast or a skirt steak. That much is possible, right?”
Reow.
He. She meant him this time, not the one who had referred to her slightingly.
“But one can hardly ask about this, can one? And anyway, his opinion shouldn’t matter, should it? Because we decided that I am being sensible these days, aren’t I? And that might be taken as a suggestive question. And what if he felt he had to lie just to be polite? Or even made a pass at me. That would be very uncomfortable for both of us.”
Reow.
“You’re right. A lie might be better than the truth. And it is rather stupid to be out in the cold, isn’t it? I’m an idiot to be thinking about my ex anyway. He is an ass-hat, and I bet you are missing the fire as much as I am. We should go back and do something productive. We could even offer to cook dinner. What do you think? Shall we go be sensible and not drool all over Nicholas Marley, though he is very handsome, sings like an angel and is fearfully smart?”
She got to her feet, and Nicholas started back for the house, going overland so she would not observe him and feel spied upon.
